friends, countrymen, fugazors…..
as you have probably all noticed, the action on fugaze.com as of late has been, well, fugaze. i think we’re all guilty of neglecting that which is fugaze in the online space (we of course are always fugaze in our day to day lives). i don’t think any of this is due to any one person’s lack of effort or what have you. i think we’ve all just lost the passion. and that’s okay.
we used to have all the time in the world to come up with new ideas or write stories for the site when we were in college (or like me, at a job where i fucked the dog 40 hrs a week). but i think we’ve all crossed that bridge now and probably find it’s harder to spend hours a day to smoke bongos and scour the internet looking for fugaze shit or writing fugaze stories.
that’s why today, february 16th 2007, fugaze inc will be closing it’s doors.
the site will still be here, and if anyone has any ideas of how we should use this space i’m all ears. i renewed the domain just last month so we have that secured for another 2 years. although i think i may be cutting off the hosting services starting next month. there’s just no point in spending $15 a month if it’s just going to sit there. yes, believe it or not, fugaze has been in the red since it started.
i would like to thank everyone for their efforts over the past 2+ years. it was good while it lasted. that’s why i think we owe it a proper burial instead of letting it rott away in it’s current state.

A noble gesture, Patrice. I attribute Fugaze’s downturn of late to a fad dying out. Let’s be honest here. The Blogosphere came in like a lion…and for me, have left like a lamb.
Better to put a once great forum to rest than to let it die a slow and painful death (ala Rolling Stones). I will miss the witty banter though, but I don’t think this is the end of the Fugaze Nation (once a Fugaze, always a Fugaze)

that’s exactly it schoems. preems and i had this exact conversation yesterday.
people don’t really give a shit about “blogs” anymore (including myself). when they first started to gain popularity everyone thought blogs were so great because everyone had “a voice” and people would write on their blog as if it were their personal diary. and as we all witnessed, everyone and their mom started a blog and people stopped caring really quickly. for whatever reason people thought that just because they were savvy enough to start a blog that this qualified them as a fuckin comedian/expert/person whose opinion mattered.blogs were losing quality due to quantity.
blogs (and blog software) are essentially just an easy way to update a website. this was our only intention when we made the switch to the blog format for fugaze.com. it saved me hours of monotonous HTML coding. but once we saw how much easier it was, we were updating the site several times daily. and this also set a precedent so that people started to expect updates more often. fugaze essentially became a blog. quantity vs quality.
and it’s not just blogs that are at fault here. whenever a new tool emerges on the internet there’s always a huge impact at first but that quickly fizzles out. it happened to youtube. it happened to myspace. and it’s going to happen to facebook 6 months from now. because people get sick of user generated content really fast. it’s really cool at first when we learn how to use it, but then once you’ve seen a guy get hit in the balls 1000 times on youtube, you stop caring about the user generated content. for the most part i use youtube now to watch clips of tv shows or music videos. and i also probably see 100% of my youtube clips on every other site but youtube. i can’t remember the last time i went on youtube.com and browsed for videos. it’s 99% shit. and it’s probably also safe to say that 90% of the time that i do watch a youtube clip that someone or some website says i must see, my typical reaction is a forced ‘ha” or “that’s pretty cool”.
the last thing i want is for fugaze.com to become the equivalent of a youtube clip of some guy getting hit in the balls. and i think any respectable fugazor would agree.
i’m sorry, i’m ranting. this is starting to sound like a blog post (snap!).

About freakin time, i’ve seen this site through all of its iterations, Fugaze, fugaze 2.0, etc… and have been disappointed with the posts, the writers and the subject.

first of all, “johnny”, i think we’re all sick of your rabble rousing and various aliases. it doesnt work, and it’s weak. if you really didn’t like the site then you wouldn’t be one of our most frequent posters. i say good riddance to you, my friend.
and fuck, obviously we’re fugaze of the year for 2007, just as we were for 2006, and WILL be for 2008, 2009, and so on. No one will EVER be as fugaze as us - fugaze proper, that is.
besides, all we were ever looking to get was aaron campigotto’s blessing (and maybe paulie’s). now that we have that, fugaze may rest in peace.
bahh.. you know what pat.. I really enjoyed the articles you consistently dug up. I think you’re a great editor and should I say it, a journalist.. As a matter of fact, ever since high school i always had the latest “fugaze”, music or whatever, b/c of you and a few others who had an ear on the street.. yeah it may be quantity over quality now, and some people maybe pretentious, righteous or have cynical attitudes (bitch nigga’s
), but the fact of the matter is, don’t loose your heart for one reason or another.. i think you guys did a great job and i consistently came to fugaze.com as one of my daily bookmarks.. yeah there’s a million of those sites out there, but you’re missing a major point.. It was great for people like myself who live separate lives but can still hear the guys he grew up with on a regular basis.. and if you think popularity has died, there’s already 6 posts on this ‘breaking news’.. so that’s not an issue..
I think the passion may have been lost b/c the website turned into work, where it used to be fun.
before closing the door consider an upgrade to the website and try again for another year.. I know you use wordpress, but the framework is seriously lacking functionality and is probably the reason why you have lost motivation for the website.. I could help you out with a new framework which will revive fugaze.com.. here are some features fugaze.com could gain from:
1) Open Publishing – anyone can ‘submit a fugaze’, and it remains as ‘unpublished’ until an editor approves.. this solves the hard work of being the primary writer but still gives you control over all the websites material.. This way you maintain your status as chief editor to keep quality high.. it’s time to loose the ‘we don’t discriminate’ motto.. the website needs more action.. and its not hard to include ratings functionally for the various articles posted.. and who knows,, maybe if someone ‘submitted a fugaze’ and it receive a perfect 5/5 fugazies, that person will be motivated to write and submit another article.
2) Registered Users - If you’re worried about too many people submitting shit.. then have a registered users section/members only privileges. This will also help build a community of people we enjoy hearing from.. and fuck it who cares,, if there’s a prick on the website.. give em the boot.. I like the indie site and kicking people off once in a while may go against the moral fibre’s of the website.. but caamm on,,, if there’s some asshole ruining it for everyone else, then why should he have a voice.. it can still be a good experience for everyone.. trust yourself and be a good diplomat.
3) Donations – why not? Hosting is costing 15/month.. That’s a two four of Peter Jackson’s per year. People may say ‘wft, a donation box?’ if you like the site you’ll donate. I will. .. any extra money you should reinvest back in to the website with new functionality. Or Maybe you could reward the best journalist of the year with the extra cash, or give away some merch?? Who’s knows.. I’m juss sayin.. and btw, if you guys had fitted hats with a tiny fugaze logo I’d ware it..
4) Multiple categories – I just found out that there was categories on the website.. these should be placed at the top.. and add a Tech category
.. what I’m saying, is the architecture of the website needs to be rebuilt from the ground up…
These are just a few ideas to get the website back on track..
I hope you guys don’t give up and close the site.. I really enjoyed the news b/c it was GOOD and it’s from people I know and respected. Before you give it up start one last post and take some recommendations, or suggestions on how fugaze 3.0 could be made even better (if that’s something you wish to do).. trust me guys, I know a good thing when I see it,, and this one could be something big one day.. like a real magazine.. Don’t think of it like Greenday selling out, think of it as doing something you love where many people can enjoy it. The formula just needs to change a bit.

darc - definitely appreciate the offer and the kind words. if and when fugaze 3.0 happens, i’ll definitely drop you a line. but fugaze.com needs to take a much needed break. maintaining a site is a lot of work. especially when it’s just a hobby. and i hope i didn’t give the impression that i was pissed about anything or at anyone. that’s not the reason. fugaze actually got fairly decent traffic for a while, and that was more than we could ask for. but when i say that we’ve lost the “passion” for it, i think that’s happened because of exhaustion, not frustration. we’ve been doing this for almost 3 years now (holy shit). that’s not a bad run at all. i dont think i’ve ever held a job for that long! again, that’s why i’d rather give the site a proper ‘burial’ instead of letting it go to shit.
fugaze, more than anything, was a community site. and it was always great seeing new/old friends posting in the comments section or the old message board. the stories themselves were only as good as the comments they received. and when a story would bust into 20-30 comments, that was really friggin cool. i think we’ll all miss that. but fugazors stick together and stay in touch. this is by no means a goodbye to fugazors. (i hate to admit it, but a few of us have actually signed up facebook accounts…but don’t tell anybody)
